Skies of (Painted) Color

Sailing In5x7 Watercolor on 90# Paper©BEDeuel  Bronson Hill Arts 2008

When we see those perfect sunny-day clouds floating above us, we see white puffs moving across the horizon, usually against a bright blue sky. As painters & photographers & poets, we also know that those clouds are never just "white". There are blues, purples, pinks, even greens mingled in the vapor canvases up there.

Painting a sky above a landscape is generally easy to capture, largely because it is put into perspective by the foreground. The colors of sky and land intertwine & reflect, but the differences in textures also help to create necessary depth.

Once you're painting upwardly, as if you are in the clouds with your subject, gaining depth, I find, is very different to portray. There are colors & shadows to help, but keeping proportion and perspective is not so easy for me.

This is the 2nd attempt I've made to paint a specific subject. And, even though I'm generally happy with the cloud formations on both pieces as they are, they will not work for the composition I want to create.

This is what I did with the first attempt:
Start of Balloon...

And, yes, I am very pleased with the whole piece with setting the hot air balloon against the clouds. However, if you look, you'll see that there is a lack of shadows to create a depth to the clouds. The mix of pink, blue & white definitely gives one the sense of clouds, but, the expanse of the cloud cover is limited. So, technically, this is the first "fail" to paint "in the clouds".

This is the second attempt:
Start of Mystery Blue Skies

Next Step of Mystery Blue Skies

Right now,the clouds are almost monochromatic: Prussian blue mostly, a touch of Cerulean blue, and titanium white. The base is somewhat "starred" with the colors being crosshatched. (I've discovered that I really, really like this effect. Maybe I like it too much!) The next step is to add some "shine" to it with some golden/yellow hues... after I fix the mottled clouds to the right-hand side of the canvas, that is. I like the depth of the shadows as they are, though. So one hurdle overcome since the last attempt. You can also probably tell that the 2 canvases were started from the same template photo. Hmmm....

BUT!

The clouds are too small & distant for the subject I want to paint. So it's time to rethink what subject I can do with this canvas!

The encouraging aspect of all of this is that, each time, I see a breakthrough in executing a design. Always learning, learning, learning! Just looking back at this earlier attempt at clouds makes the point for me. I do still love this piece, but the flow of the clouds is not really there.

What discoveries have you uncovered with your artistic techniques of late?

And, yes, it is still colder than any winter in memory around here. Hopefully, not so much where you are!

Simple Inspirations

Cece's Window

Sometimes I find myself overly absorbed in the world of so-called social media. In other words, I get trapped in the tentacles known as Facebook.

It can seem to be a “waste” of time, but, on the evenings when it I’m in need of a belly full of laughter, I can usually find it. Sometimes, it’s the opposite need that’s fulfilled: a yearning to be touched in the soul and just cry.

Social media is no substitute for face-to-face interaction, but, in it’s own way, it enables us to filter what enters our minds and hearts on the days we need that control.

Blogging was the beginning of the foray of making friends online, whom one will most likely, never actually meet. Facebook is an abbreviated, instant interaction along the same lines.

This past week, I found another connection that made my day happier and, unexpectedly, the friend’s heart happy, too. And, isn’t that what any friendship really is about?

The inspiration of the week: Cece's Window.

May your heart and soul be inspired this week and always!

Completely Fallin' Over Falls

The almost final of the Untitled Falls I posted a while back:

And, a little, teeny change and, the final painting:

And, the title is simple & to the point! "Stony Waterfall".

Falls in Motion

As mentioned in the last blog, I'm looking forward to sharing progress on different art pieces.

This one is an 11x14 water soluble oil painting of a local waterfall (we are awash in them in this part of the world!).

I was browsing channels recently and came upon some "how-to-paint" shows. There were some brush designs and techniques that I found of interest. I've tried to apply several of them in this piece.

Which, by the way, is still "Untitled Fall"...

I'll be keeping everyone posted!

Ah, Autumn!

Autumn is here, officially and literally. It is a very wonderful time of the year in this part of the world, upstate New York.

While Earth’s outdoor residents are scurrying to prepare for cold, nasty weather and snow galore, it seems that this is the season that gives the rest of us the right to unwind and relax.

The yard is as trimmed and prettied as best it will be for the year. The weather breaks in such a way that pleasant activities are easier to enjoy without the heat and humidity. The colors are startlingly beautiful. The holidays haven’t started their demands on our time or finances yet.

Yep, it is a wonderful time of the year.

Autumn inspires creativity of the mind and the hands. It can be needlework, photography, artwork, writing letters, kitchen magic, anything! It can also simply invite you to curl up next to loved ones and dive into a book or ten.

The hope is as always that everyone takes the time to indulge their bliss. My hope is that this is the season that makes it possible for you!

Happy Autumn!

Chaos

Grey Gold

A theme often touched upon in this blog is learning to accept giving ourselves some slack in our lives. When there are so many details in your world that seem to need tending, a loss of enjoyment of your life can follow.

So, while allowing the little things slide so as indulge ourselves in the bigger and better aspects of our lives is tricky, learning to deal with the onslaught of chaos is an entirely different situation. And, much more difficult to tame.

Chaos can be induced by something as minor as a head cold, or as major as losing a job. The hassle of rearranging a week of activities and obligations can be overwhelming; fortunately, the possible off-putting of events for a week can help us to avoid having to do too much maneuvering immediately. Chaos can be ignored sometimes and, often, we are better to just do so.

But, when it is something as encompassing as loss of a job, a career, an income, the chaos that ensues can be overwhelming. A reevaluation of an entire lifestyle doesn’t come simply, nor is it something that can be pushed away in the hope that delay will make the chaos disappear.

The idea of just offering it up to the Universe begs the issue of bringing our lives back into a livable state. The tricky part of chaos descending is that it is like a violent, churning ocean storm in which you are caught without a usable vessel: you are not only treading water to stay afloat, but know that you need to be swimming toward shore before the waves overtake you. The shore is order, land under our feet the necessary control. The Universe may wash you onto the sand, but without your contribution of effort, the odds decrease significantly.

There are times when it seems like an entire front of chaos blows across your shoreline, tossing a new storm over your haven constantly, ripping the plywood you’ve just affixed for safety, off, in a single puff.

Other Side of the Door

Yep.

Been that way for a while now. Still have no system to bring chaos into line; still dealing with each crisis, unexpected expense, loss, illness, etc., at a time. Sometimes it’s relatively clear what needs to be done to move out of the storm. Other times, there is no obvious solution; or worse, any solution that you can implement as others hold the power, if you will.

Maybe it is as straightforward as letting the Universe decide for you. Maybe it is forgiving yourself for not having the ability to solve a situation brought about by chaos. Maybe it just is what it is and it’s okay to accept that. Maybe it is taking a lot of deep breaths, closing your eyes, opening them again and refocusing your energies.

It seems to most likely be the last one. And, that’s okay if that's what it has to be.

IF "Glow"

‘Tis the season, so we hear! The snow has arrived in just the right amount; a trace to dust the grass gracefully. Enough to be able to say, maybe, just maybe, we’ll have the traditional “white Christmas”.

Of course, the idea of the “traditional” can be difficult to pin down. What might be traditional to one, may be new or bizarre to another. In Florida, a white Christmas might indicate the beginning of the end of the world. Unless we’re talking about “white” sand!

As the Illustration Friday topics have come along, I’ve approached them as traditional pieces of art, or cartoon-like illustrations. There is an option for “digital” art which, not being proficient in Photoshop and such, I’ve avoided. Until now… Consider it a new approach to a traditional form for me.

What tradition would you like to do differently? Or would you not want to change a thing?

Hope the illustration reminds you of the beauty of the winter, of the coming of the season!

Warm and Fuzzy: a Twenty Minute Challenge

A fleeting memory, sketched as quickly as the season has passed.

The golds and purples of autumn are here, flowing over mature brambles, climbing stalks grown strong.

The gray skies slip past, a background to emphasize the bright colors of the land.

Leaves turn sleepy, curling up, preparing to drop onto a bed thick with summer's sod.

Time to slow down, to enjoy the few weeks that remain of the year 2012.

Some Coloring Fun

With fall pretty much parked outside the house, I've found a little more (not a lot of) time to hit the studio. Also, I'm trying to rest my left wrist a bit, to ease up a chronic case of tendonitis, so the keyboard is on light duty right now.

So just a quick blog to share the newest ones:

These last 2 have been submitted to Teri for the Twenty Minute Challenge, which I enjoyed trying, immensely. Same reference photo, 2 different takes on it in 2 separate 20-minute blocks.

Let me know what you think!

A while back, I posted about personalized notecards that I did for a lovely young woman's bridal shower. Her wonderful mother took the design one step further and had the bakery recreate it for the cake for her shower!

I think it worked very well!

Hope this post finds you and yours safe and secure and finding time to enjoy each other!

Imperfect for IF

This sketch of a photograph taken last October represents one of about 3 artpieces that vex me. All of the pieces have the same 2 elements that elude me in any medium: leaves and water.

The First Completed Attempt:
An Imperfect Attempt
So, how does this represent "Imperfect"? As long as my attempts at representing the original scene are "imperfect", I will keep pushing for "perfection" of the subject.

If everything was always perfect, what would we strive for in our lives?
The Perfect Original
**********************************************************************************
For whatever reason (and the reasons seem to be varied), the last few times I've tried to post to Illustration Friday, it won't take my file. I thought I had it figured out, but then other problems started to arise. Any suggestions would be helpful regarding reducing DPI (without PhotoShop), "Save as" options (like web?), and, now, a message of "wrong file type" even though I'm uploading a jpeg file.

So, in a round-about way, this post hasn't made it to IF. But, the topic was interesting nonetheless! Thanks for the idea!

As Time Goes By... Woof!

As mentioned in the last blog,  it's been 8 years since we started to promote the idea of artistic personalized items. Bronson Hill Art...
